RADICAL RESPONSIBILITY: The Ownership Alternative

Radical Responsibility offers an alternative to the “blame game.”   It involves stepping out of the blame paradigm altogether, to focus on choice and possibility. I define Radical Responsibility as the choice to embrace 100% ownership for every circumstance we face in life, as a conscious act of self-empowerment and the genuine exercise of personal freedom. Radical Responsibility is not to be confused with self-blame. It has nothing to do with blame. It is simply the choice to focus our attention, time and energy on that which we have some influence over…ourselves.

Generally, when we are unhappy about some circumstance, we look for someone or something to blame. We give away our power and hand over the control of our own internal states to people and situations completely beyond our control.  Radical Responsibility is the choice to take our power back and focus on finding solutions rather than someone or something to blame. We simply have to ask ourselves one very powerful question to enter the world of Radical Responsibility: “What Can I Do?”

Radical Responsibility & Mindfulness-Based Emotional Intelligence

The practice of Radical Responsibility involves training ourselves in both mindfulness and emotional intelligence. We instinctually respond to discomfort, physical, mental or emotional, with avoidance, distancing or blaming.  Developing greater awareness and moment-to-moment presence of mind through the practice of mindfulness can help us recognize shifts of attitude where we begin to feel victimized by our circumstances.

Strengthening our self-reflective muscles, so to speak, can help us recognize these self-limiting mindsets and make the choice embrace ownership, choice and personal freedom in the moment. Training in emotional intelligence helps us to understand our feelings and emotional triggers.  We can explore how the perceptions of our needs being met or not lead to positive or challenging feeling states.  Self-awareness, self-understanding and self-empathy all provide a foundation for accessing more power and freedom in our personal and professional lives.

Effective leadership involves stepping into a leadership position with ourselves.  We cannot control others or the world around us, but we can become powerful and positive influencers and leaders, by reclaiming the “driver’s seat” in our own lives, through mindfulness-based emotional intelligence training and the philosophy and practice of Radical Responsibility.
